Samuel Shrewsbury built a house of stone on land given to him by his in-laws after marrying into the Dickinson family (see info on the LB Terra Salis.) This house was used as a stage coach stop along the Midland Trail. Later, in the 1940s it was a boarding house where my Grandfather stayed during the week as he worked at DuPont plant and went back home to Coal Grove OH on weekends to be with his family (see Hoskins Family Reunion LB) Eventually he had enough money saved up to move his family to the area and build a house.

Standing at the southwest corner of the Old Stone House (on Rt. 60 in Belle) walk 18 paces (1 pace = 2 steps) on a bearing of 175 degrees to the brush. The letterbox is under an arrangement of stones. Be stealthy as the Belle police drive by frequently. Try to look like tourists!

The Old Stone House is open for tours May - October on the 3rd Saturday from 10-1 p.m. Adults are $4.00 Seniors and children ages 6-12 are $3.00. But can be open for group or special tours--call 304-949-2398.

If you plan ahead, we can also have the Rand History Library open if you are coming through! Just email to make arrangements for the Library.
