JULY 4, 2010 - BOXES CHECKED AND ALL FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION

An easy 2+ mile walk on old farm roads and paths through the beautiful woods of the Arcadia Management Area. There is one wet spot that may be difficult to cross after heavy rains. Note, the beautiful Zebra stamp was carved by Music Woman.

Stella woke up with a start. Suddenly she knew why she was so excited. Today was the day she was visiting the brand new wild animal park in Arcadia. As she ate her breakfast she reviewed the directions to the park. “From Rt 3, drive down Rt 165 2.2 miles. The park is on the right.” That seemed simple enough.

As Stella parked her car in the dirt lot, she saw other families getting out of their cars and heading towards the tram. Stella walked around the metal gate and boarded the tram that stood by the Bliven Trail sign. The tram started with a learch and headed up the dirt road. Stella breathed in the fresh Arcadia forest air. Ahhh. The tram went up, up, a hill. When they neared the top, the tram stopped. Stella got out of the tram and stepped on a flat rock in the road. Then she saw what made the tram stop. On the right side of the road behind a rock shaped like the continent of Africa stood the largest elephant Stella had ever seen! Stella went behind the rock and took an image of the elephant. She wondered if it was true that an elephant never forgets.

Everyone boarded the tram and they continued up the road. Soon they found themselves heading down hill. As the tram approached a Y in the road, Stella noticed that even though the main road went to the left, the tram turned right down the single track path.

The tram winded its way through the beautiful Arcadia woods then, after a few minutes, stopped. Stella got off the tram and spied a stone wall on the right side of the trail. Behind the western end of the wall (low under a pile of small stones) stood a zebra. Stella quickly got out her notebook and took an image of the zebra. Did you know that stripes on the zebra are like fingerprints on a person – no two are stripe patterns are alike?

Stella boarded the tram and it continued down the path passing an old foundation on the left. At the T with the circle of stones in the center, the tram turned left. Stella noted that this was a narrow trail with ferns and stone walls on both sides. The tram crossed a stream bed. This time of year the ground was dry enough and the tram had no trouble passing this spot. Stella wondered how difficult the trail would be to traverse during the wet season.

When the tram had gone, what Stella estimates to be about 100 steps beyond the stream, they stopped. On the left was a small “clearing”/opening. Behind a very large pine tree at 330 degrees stood the worlds tallest animal, the giraffe. Giraffes rarely lay down; they even sleep and give birth standing up. Stella walked behind the large pine and took her image of the beautiful creature then rejoined the people on the tram.

After the tram had continued down the trail a short distance, they came out on a dirt road and turned left. When the tram came to the T in the road at # 671, it turned left and passed through a metal gate. It continued straight (not right) and soon passed over a stream. Up the hill they went. Stella noticed they passed the trail on the left that they had gone down not too long before. Up, Up, up they went. As they neared the top of the hill just past a small trail on the left, the tram stopped next to a large glacier erratic on the left side of the road. Basking in the shade behind this large rock was a lion. Stella LOVED lions and quickly made an image of this magificent boy. Someone once told her that a male lion's roar can be heard up to 5 miles away . Boy that must be loud!

Once everyone was back onboard, the tram continued down the trail until they reached the Bliven Trail sign and the parking lot.
