Location: Tuckahoe State Park, Queen Anne, MD

Difficulty: Easy, 3/4 mile nature loop.

Directions: For directions to Tuckahoe State Park and more information about the park, visit the park's web site at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/eastern/tuckahoe.html.

Enter the campground area from Cherry Lane and turn left at the first intersection into the "Cherry Lane Picnic Area". Park near the sign for the "Lake Trail". If you visit the park when the campground area is closed, you can park outside of the gate and hike in or park in the lake area to access the "Lake Trail" and begin your search on the hike back to the lake area (refer to park map on web site for clarification).

Notes: Hunting is allowed at Tuckahoe State Park, but not in the area in which this trail is located. Beware of ticks (rumored to be present year round) and poison ivy throughout the park. Highly recommend the use of Permethrin on your clothing (we use Sawyer Insect Repellent for Clothing) to stop the ticks.

Heritage: According to the Tuckahoe State Park Trail Guide "The land within Tuckahoe State Park and, in particular Tuckahoe Creek, has a very rich history. The area's earliest inhabitants were the Nanticoke Indians, who established villages along Tuckahoe Creek".

Clues: Follow the "Lake Trail" from the picnic area and cross over the first foot bridge. Once crossing this bridge, begin to look for a two-in-one maple tree on the right side of the trail with a blue blaze on the north side of it. Stand with your back against this tree and take a bearing of 165 degrees. Take 15 steps to a hollow tree stump and inside you will find the "Tuckahoe Indian Letterbox". If you are the first to locate this letterbox, be sure to take the "First to Find" magnet.
