This is a 1.2 mile loop with 2 letterboxes on the Indian Rock Shelters Trail in North Madison, CT. The trek should take under one hour, passing cliff faces, rock shelters, small climbs and wetland areas. The property is under the care of the Madison Land Conservation Trust.

Planted by Bluebird on September 20, 2002.

Directions: Off of Route 80 in Madison, take Summer Hill Road north .7 miles to Twilight Drive on your left. Drive .5 miles to Lake Drive on your left. Park in the cul-de-sac by the trailhead (posted).

From the trailhead proceed to the signage for the blue dot trail (#14). Head left; the loop returns you here later. Enjoy the woodland walk by beeches, sugar and red maples, oaks, birches, ash and hickory. Soon you will see a rock face ahead, encompassing a large overhang shelter. Take the side trail on the left just below it, passing beneath the shelter. Imagine the native people who may have rested within. Just before the trails turns to the right to return you to the blue dots, check behind the rock in a low ground level overhang for the first box, the Indian Caves Letterbox!

Continue on the blue-dotted trail, over rock and root, passing wetland areas. Before long you should note two "lazy" rocks on the left side of the trail. Each has been so lazy that they have almost become part of the trees which they lean on (the rocks are separated by 10 or so feet). The Lazy Rock Letterbox is under one of them!

The rest of your walk simply completes the loop of the blue trail. Watch for when it crosses the stream and continues up a short climb, eventually winding its way back to the culvert above which you parked.
