This island near the NC/VA border is a quaint little town. We went to day and picked peaches and apples, got a picnic lunch from the Knotts Island Market, then rode the ferry to Currituck, NC. It was a fun way to spend the day...even better that we planted a letterbox!
From NC, take the Currituck Sound Ferry to Knotts Island. Go through the island and to the Knotts Island Market. Take a left at the split in the road in front of the Knotts Island market. Drive about 1-2 miles until you see the sign at the top of the page.
From Virginia, go through Pungo on Princess Anne Rd. Go south another 25 minutes or so and the road will change to Marsh Causeway Road. You can read about this neat road here: http://www.knottsislandonline.com/travelguide/marshcauseway.htm
After the bridge that is shown on the website and before you get to Knotts Island, you will see the picture above. Stop here, park, read the sign about the wildlife you might see, then take the trail off to the right.
Stop to read about the turtles and wetlands. If you are quiet you might see some of the local wildlife. Maybe an Osprey?
Walk through the pine forest. See how the trees look burnt? A couple of years ago, there was a wildfire here. It was on both sides of the causeway, blown by the sea winds.
You will come to a spooky forest of dead trees. If it had been near Halloween, I would have found a way to hide the box here!
Read about the barn owl, then walk under the tree that rainbows over the trail. Look for some blackberry bushes on the right side of the trail. In the second clump of them, you will find "Knotts Island". Please rehide well, as it is right next to the trail.
