N.B.: Four from One Logbook replaced 1/10/09! Alas, one of the Four has fallen.
Bluebird verified in place 3/25/10 - no P.I. this time of year - recommend avoid this box in summer and early fall unless you are immune to P.I.!!! J.W.

P.S. - Melissa Vanek, listed as a contact (and author) in the clues, is no longer at Holcomb Farms. We leave her name here for posterity, but removed her now-defunct e-mail. J.W.

Holcomb Farm is open to the public from dawn to dusk.

Bluebird Letterbox

Planted on 10/5/2002 (Revised 4/03, 9/08) by Tree Fairy and Chester Copperpot
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 15 minutes

Directions to Holcomb Farm: From the center of Granby, take Route 20 West approximately 2.5 miles to Day Street South on the left. Follow Day Street South a short distance to the end. You can't miss the big red barns directly in front of you that mark Holcomb Farm.

Clues:
You have caught the melodic voice of the bluebird up in the white birches in the parking lot. Follow the song to try to spot the bird!

From the parking lot, while facing the main building, turn left and walk towards the sheep pen. The song is coming from the trees by the pen. Continue straight, alongside the pen. Say hello to the chickens! When you get to the corner of the pen, look to your left and you will see the fiber and dye garden. That's where we grow plants from which we can make dyes for clothing and other materials! Return to the sheep pen and proceed to the back of the main building. That bluebird is now singing from the wire between the barns! You will see an herb garden to your right and the Three Sister's garden to your left. The Three Sisters garden is where we grow corn, squash, and beans - staples of the Native American diet.

That bluebird, with the rusty-colored chest just flew down the hill. Follow the path down the hill. At the bottom of the hill, you'll find the picnic grove. On the opposite end of the picnic grove there is a small trail. Follow this trail to see an authentic Native American wigwam - take a peek inside!

Return to the picnic grove and walk across the wooden bridge that crosses Kendall Brook. The bluebird is singing his heart out for you now. On the left, you will see six trees growing from a single base. In the middle of the trees, tucked under some leaves, you will find your prize! (Look out for poison ivy!) You can actually spot the bluebird house on the top of the farm fence as well. You did some great bird-watching today! Congratulations!

Please be sure to discretely stamp in and replace the letterbox so others may enjoy! No ink in box. Blue and rust (orange) markers might look nice!

Thank you!!

West approximately 2.5 miles to Day Street South on the left. Follow
Day Street South a short distance to the end. You can't miss the big

From the parking lot:

Go the direction opposite the path of the sun, crossing Day.
Unlock the unlocked door –
Be sure to unlock it behind you.

Cleave the fields in two.
Enjoy a spectacular view!

Walk in the direction of the birthplace of the winter winds.
Count the links on the lockless lock.
And pass through away from where the animals flock.
Double your count and step to the left.
Left, right – count as two.

Four from one,
A mighty pine ascends.
Look inside –
Your journey ends.
