From route 202 in Litchfield, 1.9 miles west of the entrance to White Memorial Foundation, go north on Cathole Road for 1.7 miles to the Mattatuck Trail on left and roadside parking.
The overlook is 0.9 miles, the first box is just after the view.

Head into the woods behind the trail sign.
This hike is all on the blue blazed Mattatuck Trail and as with most blue trails in CT. it has it’s ups and downs along the way. After a few of these you come to a sharp right turn (double blue blaze on a white birch tree) and then it’s mostly uphill after that. You’ll go through what I call a mini gorge with several fallen trees around and the trail levels out for awhile before going uphill once more. As you head up again you get the feel of a more open area, like you might be getting to the top and then there’s a sharp left turn into a gully and up and out the other side, bringing you to The Overlook. There isn’t much of a view with the trees in full foliage but the top is all ledge (slick rock) and lovely to sit and rest a bit. Continue on the trail looking to the left for a tree with a perfect hole near the base. From this tree take 40+ steps along the trail (there’s a four to five foot log on the right) look right for a large rock (ledge?) with deadwood on it’s top. Go down around the right side and look in back in the first split for box #1.
Retrace your steps towards your car until you get back to the mini gorge. Near the far end look on the left for a large slanty rock right on the trail. Reaching behind it should give you box #2.
Although this rock is right on the trail it’s deep enough in to be virtually unseen. Please rehide the same way. Thanks
