Lost Maples SNA
From San Antonio, go west on Hwy 90 for about 50 miles to Sabinal, then north on Ranch Road 187. Go about 40 miles through Utopia then Vanderpool. Lost Maples SNA is about 5 miles north of Vanderpool on Ranch Road 187.
Stop at the ranger station and pay the $5 day-use fee. Then park at the East/West Trail trailhead. Follow the East Trail all the way to Camp Area "C". Start down the West trail at the restroom. From the West Trail sign, proceed 22 steps. Look left to see a bench dedicated to Bill Cochran and Hal Gullford. Go another 73 steps and look left to see a 5-trunk tree about 10 steps off the path. One of the trunks has been cut down and is hollowed out. Under some rocks, find David's Birthday Letterbox.
