Location: Start at 1201 E Division St, Neillsville (on Hwy 10, near the fairgrounds east of town)
Time Estimate: 30-45 minutes walking + short drive
Terrain: Woodchip trail with slight hills.

Adopted as Wisconsin's official state domestic animal in 1971, this animal reflects the importance of the dairy industry in Wisconsin's economy and heritage. This animal comes in different sizes and shapes. The major US dairy breeds are Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, Jersey, and Milking Shorthorn. The largest breed in terms of number is the Holstein. In 2006, Wisconsin had 1.243 million of these animals living in the state.

Clark County is Wisconsin’s Dairy Heartland. The county leads Wisconsin in dairy production and ranks in the top 25 counties nationally. Therefore it’s not surprising that you can find a large replica of this animal in Neillsville. As a matter of fact, it is the largest TALKING replica of this animal in the world!

You can listen to what this chatty animal has to say, or look at nearby signs, to get the following information:

The year that the nearby pavilion appeared at the World’s Fair: ______ (A)

The radio station number that operates from the pavilion: ______.__ (B)

Before leaving the area, you might want to stop inside the pavilion to buy some tasty dairy products!

Now get in your vehicle and drive 1.2 miles west on Hwy 10 (Division Street). Park in the Arboretum lot on the north side of the road, just before the bridge over the river.

Start at the South Entrance to the trail, and turn left after passing through the entry. Continue ahead and over a bridge, then left again. Go right at a “T” and follow the river. Cross a culvert and then a bench on the left, but stay on the main trail. Next you’ll pass a bench on the right and then reach another “T” where you should head left to get to a bench. Sit down to do some math:

Take the number to the left of the decimal point of (B) then add to it each of the individual digits of A. ______+ ___+ ___+___+ ___ = ______ (C)

Take the last 2 digits of the year (A) as a single number and then subtract the number represented by the first 2 digits of (A) ____ - ____ = ______ (D)

Standing at the bench, take a bearing of (C) and then walk approximately (D) steps. The domestic animal is covered and resting at the SW base.

Please reseal, replace and rehide everything carefully so this box is available for future visitors.

Return to the bench and take the trail north/northeast. Cross a bridge and pass a bench. Take a right at the intersection, pass two more benches, and then take a left at a “T”. Ignore the next left, then cross over a bridge and up the hill to return to the parking lot.

Since we don’t live in the area, status reports would be greatly appreciated!
