Directions: Valhalla area is located in the Chequamegon National Forest. Take Hwy C out of Washburn Wisconsin for approx 9 miles and you will see a sign Mount Valhalla on your left. Turn left into the parking lot.

At one point in time this location was host to one of the best ski jump areas in the state. This National Forest area is known for its feathered inhabitants. The jump was built around the time of the CCC Camps in the thirties. Lloyd "Snowball" Severud who is now 91 recalls it being a great toboggan slide area. Lloyd "Snowball" Severud was many times National Veterans Class ski jumping champion and also did two tours as U.S. Ski Team Head Jumping Coach. When he was Central Division coach, he and a few others went and cut the trees off of the landing and reopened the hill for a training camp. Don West recalls sleeping in the DuPont club in Washburn. Don skied there several different trips. Don West said the hill was known as Snowball's jump. When Don skied there, the jump had a small tower, just 10-15 feet high as he recalls, but in the early days, it may have had none. But it had a judging stand besides the landing. Snowball also made a living working at Valhalla. You can look up Lloyd’s history on the net. Please be sure to go to the barricade at the bottom of the ski hill and look up to get an idea of just how high and steep this mountain really is.

You should bring a walking stick, snacks and beverages, good walking shoes and of course your letterbox material. This box is not for people who have weak legs.

Clues: Go to the south west corner of the parking lot and look for an outhouse and an old building. As you enter the no parking area look to your right and you will see a trail marked Iron River Trail. Follow this trail to the top until you see a sign that reads (overlook). Look to your left and go to the large pine tree by the lookout point. Stand by this tree and find a tree with a fork in it. Looking just to the left of this forked tree you will see a large piece of cement with somewhat of a point on it. Go stand in front of this cement block and look for a rock on the edge of a dirt wall (approx 50 ft away) that is about the size of an adults head and walk over to it. If you find 3 small trees sort of clustered together with sticks and leaves at the base then you need to brush away the leaves and find the letterbox in an old rusted can.

Have fun and enjoy your hike. Take in the views at the top of Mt Valhalla.
