Bird in the Woods Letterbox

Difficulty: easy
Hike Length: 20 minutes to the box

My husband’s parents live in the Woodlands, and we like to visit them because of all the trees and the birds that we see in their back yard. My son designed this stamp because of the enjoyable times in the Woodlands. There are other birds in these woods besides the one we put there – The day we planted this letterbox, we were able to see a blue heron.

From I-45, take the Woodlands Parkway exit and head west on the Parkway. Pass Grogan’s Mill and Lake Woodlands. Turn left (south) onto S. Panther Creek Drive. Turn left onto the second street, which is Glen Loch Drive. On Glen Loch pass Tangle Brush Dr, and look on the right for a parking lot with a pavilion. Park in this parking lot, near the street. Across Glen Loch Dr is the entrance to a hiking/bike path with a large sign saying “Nature Trail to Grogan’s Mill.” This trail is where you want to start your search for Bird in the Woods.

The trail is paved, and you will stay on this trail until right before you reach the letterbox. Begin by heading away from Glen Loch Dr on the trail. There will be a narrow paved road on your left. The trail will veer to the right then the golf course will be on your left. Continue along.

You will cross one wooden bridge and later cross a small boardwalk over a low place. After walking for a while longer you will cross 2 larger bridges, one right after another. The first of the larger bridges is cement and the second is wood and goes over a creek. Start counting steps when you are at the end of the second large bridge. After about 80 steps you will come to a place in the trail where the creek you crossed earlier goes very near the trail. The creek is fairly large and on the left.

From this point, continue on the paved trail up the slight incline and entering into denser woods. When the trail curves to the left, continue going straight (you go off the trail at this point) until you run into a very long fallen tree. (The fallen tree is about 8 ft from the trail.) Step over the middle of the log and go 6 steps away from the trail to a tree.

The box is on the back side of the tree away from the trail between two root flares. It is under some branches, needles and bark. After stamping, please cover it well.
