Only 15 minutes from downtown Erie, along the shores of Lake Erie, lies the beautiful town of North East, Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of northwestern Pennsylvania's wine country, North East residents welcome visitors with their "grape" personality and charm.

Freeport Beach is an ideal place for swimming, picnics and sunsets. There is a lifeguard on duty at Freeport Beach from early June through Labor Day. Halli Reid Park features a playground, concession stand, picnic pavilions and plenty of beachfront walking. The park is named for the first woman to swim across Lake Erie. Halli Reid started her swim at Long Point, Canada at 6:00 p.m. August 8, 1993, and swam 26 miles to arrive at Freeport Beach at 10:30 a.m. August 9, 1993.

Directions:

Freeport Beach is located in North East, PA. Find the intersection of Route 5 and Route 89. The Freeport Restaurant is located at this intersection. Head north towards the lake. Route 89 becomes Freeport Road. Park in the lot.

Clues:

You are going to walk directly south leaving the parking lot and heading into the grassy area. The picnic pavilions will be on your left. Look for a stand of 3 trees (Wide, Thin, Wide). The trees are approximately 48 steps from the edge of the parking lot.

The "Wide" tree farthest east has a hollow spot about 3 feet from the ground. The box is wedged inside this opening and covered with pinecones to disguise its location.
