Friday, May 16, 2003 marked the Texas Historical Commision state dedication for the Athens City Cemetery.

The entrance lawn of the cemetery boasts a large black gum tree and contemplation arbor. Liberty Park was erected and dedicated to those who lost their lives in the September 11, 2003 attacks on the World Trade Center.

Directions to the Box:

On the North side of the Henderson County Courthouse square in Athens, turn south on Prairieville and drive 0.3 miles to the entrance of the Athens Cemetery. Turn right into the cemetery drive, but, DO NOT DRIVE THROUGH THE CEMETERY GATE! Park outside of the gates. On the outer lawn of the cemetery, you will see a very large black gum tree and arbor. Walk past the black gum tree (which is beautiful in the fall months) and enter Liberty Park arbor. At the picnic table, sit facing downtown Athens. Look to the northwest corner of the arbor. Find the base of the grapevine growing on that side of the arbor, and you will also find United We Stand.
