The King likes to fish. Back in the day, King was pretty obsessed with fishing. But then Acorn and Starfish came along, we left Arizona, you know how that goes. There is much lamenting.

Punky, not so into the fishing. Sitting in the sun with a good book is pretty appealing though, so off to Lake Hemet with both kids and a wagonload of worms. As you know, I am required to insert a history lesson here. Lake Hemet has been around, believe it or not, since 1895. It was constructed at a cost of $183,712.49 by speculators with investments in the then-tiny towns of Hemet and San Jacinto. At the time of completion, it was the highest masonry dam in the world at 122 feet. The legendary floods of 1916 poured over the top, however, and another 13 feet were added shortly thereafter. The now 135 foot-high dam holds back 10,500 acre feet of water, providing most of the water for the communities of the San Jacinto Valley. The lake has been open to recreation since 1933, though it has never allowed swimming. Or canoes, much to King's chagrin.

Nature note- this lake is home to a nesting pair of bald eagles. Watch for them in the winter.

Park in the free (sort of- Adventure Pass required) Forest Service lot at the end of Hemet Lake Road. Take the footpath from the parking lot down to the main lake trail, continuing on this trail for about half a mile. You will reach a large clearing, a former gravel quarry with a large, rusted metal screen at the center. Walk due south about thirty paces to a jeffery pine with scrub oak, manzanita, and sage around it's base. The box is beneath a small chunk of granite around the back of the tree from the left side. Please rehide very carefully, as this trail is quite busy with fisherpeople.

Have fun and let us know if you find it!
