Purgatory Chasm State Park off Route 146 in Sutton, MA.

A unique natural landmark, Purgatory Chasm runs for a quarter of a mile between granite walls rising as high as 70 feet. Popular with picnickers and rock-climbers alike, the Chasm is believed to have its origin in the sudden release of dammed-up glacial meltwater near the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 14,000 years ago.

Drive past the visitors center on your right and park at the LAST parking lot on the left, near a brown painted building. Walk north (away from the visitor center with bathrooms) up the road. You are looking for the Old Purgatory Trail sign. This is the most northern end of the trail. There seem to be 3 entrances on this side of the parking lot. You will see a picnic table, grill and sign for Old Purgatory Trail. You can pick up the trail here, but I suggest you take the trail behind the next picnic table and grill on the left to start. The 3rd entrance to this trail has a drainage grate in the ground and a yellow paint line in the road. (Someone has spray painted the letters SW [from the trail side] next to the grate in light blue paint. It looks like MS from the roadside) This trail has blue markings on trees and rocks.

Star Wars: R2D2
Follow the path of blue markings on trees. There will be several rock ledges on your right. When you come to a tree with a blue dot and a slight hill with LOTS of roots to trip you, look at the ledge with a pine tree on the corner, growing on top of the ledge. Turn right before this ledge up a narrow path. This ledge with tree will be on your left. Take about 18 steps and look to your right at a low, long ledge. Notice one rock about 16 feet to the right that looks like a small cave. This is where R2D2 hides just like the scene in Star Wars IV before R2D2, C3PO and Luke Skywalker meet Obi Wan Kenobi for the first time. Log in and re-hide well as this a popular place. Return back to trail.

Star Wars: Yoda (REPLACED in a new, but nearby location)
Continue on the Old Purgatory Trail (to the right). Look for rocks in the trail path with blue paint. (Don't count the first rock with the faded paint. I count the second rock with blue paint is large and on the trail so you need to walk around it.) On the third well-painted rock look to your right at the large rock ledge. There is a tree leaning against the ledge. Yoda WAS hiding in a box in the hole behind the tree but he decided to take a walk.Continue along the large rock ledge to the end. This means off the trail and up a slight incline. At the top of the incline look for a dead log laying on the ground. It will be about 27 steps North. You will see the Purgatory Road down the steep hill in front of you. At the right end of the log (not the root end) look for the largest rock 4 steps from the log. Yoda is hiding on the north side of the rock under some dead branches. Please Bring green ink or a greeen marker.

I hope you enjoyed my stamps. It was a joy to carve them and I hope to add more boxes to this series someday. Send me an e-mail if you have any problems or my boxes need maintenance. Hint: Both boxes are big enough for a hitchhiker.

I have gone climbing and splunking (exploring the caves) in this park since I was a child. I have a lot of wonderful memories and photos. If you have time, bring a picnic and camera and go through the Chasm Loop Trail or Charley's Loop Trail (to the right or north of the Chasm). For younger children the Playground is a great place for lunch and playing. We are there every few weeks in the summer. Look for a Silver Honda Pilot in the parking lot with a Letterboxing bumper sticker.
