At the Mendota Train Museum, you can see Engine #4978.
It originally was assigned to the CB&Q Galesburg division and was carried on active assignment as late as 1961. The #4978 display was donated by the CB&Q Railroad to the LaSalle County Historical Society, May 1965.
The light Mikado-type locomotive with 2-8-2 wheel design was built in 1923 at Baldwin Locomotive works, Eddystone, Pennsylvania yards. The tender held 19 tons of coal and 10,000 gallons of water. Waycar #14451 was built in the Burlington*s Aurora shops in 1911.
Follow the tracks in the direction the locomotive is facing to the 3rd crossing. At this crossing there is a road parallel to the tracks that shorty leads to a small community park. Park. There will be a creek off to your right. At a bearing of 170 degrees you will notice a clearing in the tree lined border of the park. Take this path up. Now turn to your right, walk approx. 40 paces (1 pace = 1 left, then right step). On the right will be the first little clearing you come to, and nestled in the base of a small tree is your quest. Be quick, you won't want to be caught up here when a train is coming!
