Trail easy, flat, less than 1/4 mile.
A good beginner search with only one spot where you have to climb. In addition to your stamp, all you need is a simple compass or a decent sense of direction!

Enter the San Elijo Ecological Preserve which is on Manchester Avenue in Cardiff, CA. The entry to the park is west of I-5, on the south side of the road, and is on a bad curve, so be cautious. The hours are from 9:30a.m. till 5:30p.m. each day; closed major holidays.

Begin at the interesting topographical display that is inside the open air pavilion visitor's center. Take the path heading south. At the junction, take the center trail. This is a well traveled trail with several great viewing spots and benches, with information about the lagoon, the birds, and the tidal flow. Continue on this path until you see a sign "Area Closed". Take 16 adult paces beyond there. Take the north/west path. Look for a brown sign "Area Closed - Do Not Enter". Go 16 more adult paces. Face south/west and look ahead for a fallen tree. When there are no passersby, this is where you climb off the raised bridge and into a sometimes wet muddy area. Keep very quiet as I am sure the rangers would not want all the visitors trekking off the path. At the V of that tree, go west/north. You will have to climb over and under some downed tree trunks.Look ahead for an old tire on your right. Just above there is a good sized tree branch that has fallen, and has split. You will find the box nestled in the crook of that split.

I recently repositioned the box because it was on the ground, and getting soaked with water flowing through there from the heavy rain. It is January, and in another month the nasturtiums that have popped up should be in beautiful bloom in yellows and oranges!

Please replace everything just as you found it, inside plastic and with the lid secure. After you have signed the guest book, go back to the main trail and continue on to see the remainder of the lagoon preserve.

As of August 30, 2008. this box is missing. So sad.
