While waiting for our reservations at Suttle Lake CG and after leaving Twin Lakes CG we found a one nights home at Quinn River CG, which borders Crane Prairie Reservoir. While cruising through the campground, doing the “pick the best spot” game, Gwen said she wanted to be by the river at site # 30. I said that there wasn’t a river, it was a reservoir, but pulled into site #30. Gwen was right again! After unhooking the trailer and setting up our camp, I did what I do best and took a nap. Gwen on the other hand piled into her kayak and made a “First” descent on Quinn River, a short treacherous white water run.
Now in river running lore ‘First” descents put participants in really special company. Some names that come to mind are Powell, Galloway, Kolb brothers, Georgie White and Bessie Hyde.
After waking up and having a bite of dinner we did a bit of exploring, found some Oregon history and planted a letterbox.

Clues:

From Cascades Lakes Hwy 46 turn onto Osprey Point Interpretive Trail. Turn right at the sign that says “Observation Site”. Drive 1/8th of a mile to the trailhead near the picnic tables and park. Take a left turn toward Billy’s resting spot. Pass by the resting spot after reading the information and take approximately 125 more steps to Bingham’s tree.
The letterbox is hidden under the rock next to the prone tree directly behind Bingham’s tree.
After stamping in continue but a few steps to the start of Quinn Springs and the site of Gwen’s historic river run. Access to these sites can be made near site #30 in the CG.

For avid birders you can see several species after you lather yourself with bug repellant and hike a short distance to Osprey Point.
