The Endangered Bull Trout
Hood River Co.
Dee, Oregon
7/29/2007

All over Oregon you can find signs at lakes and rivers calling attention to Bull Trout and how fishermen are supposed to toss them back if caught. Bull Trout are scarce and endangered. Once you complete this letterbox quest you will learn the reason why and understand what is missing in the Bull Trout habitat and their life.

Clues:

From Hwy 281 coming from or going to Hood River turn off at Dee, Oregon when you see the sign for Lost Lake. Once over the bridge turn right onto Punchbowl Road rather than heading to Lost Lake. Drive 1.1 miles to a turn out on the right side of Punchbowl Road. If you cross over another bridge then you have gone just a bit too far, but there is another turn out you can use to turn around or just park there and the hike will be a few steps further.
At the first turn out park and find the pipe gate and head down the dirt road/trail.
Note: We found the pipe gate unlocked, but obeyed the warning signs advising foot traffic only. At approximately 1/3rd of a mile down the road/trail there will be a turn to the right and at this point take the smaller trail to the left (actually it seemed as though the trail continued straight while the road turned right). This path will turn into several paths, but not to worry, just find the best one and head down to the confluence. Once at river level find the largest boulder up on the bank, and with your back to the boulder and the river find the hairy trunks of seven at 3 steps at 160 degrees. The letterbox is hidden in the middle of the 3 most likely of the hairy guys under tree duff and a rock.
You will find that it will be much easier if you walk around to the other side of the seven rather than trying to reach them from the boulder side.

Now if you missed all of the cool stuff on the way down the trail make sure that you keep checking the side trails to your right on your way back to your vehicle. You can catch great views of waterfalls, rock formations, and the Punchbowl.
