Before discovery of a dip (1894) and vaccine (1898), the American cattle industry faced ruin, as it lost $40 million annually from cattle tick fever. In 1918, tick eradication began in East Texas, with colorful, exciting "dipping days" enforced every two weeks from spring to fall. Sometimes citizens resented the compulsory dipping, and dynamited vats or held shootouts with authorities. This dipping vat is typical of 50 built in Van Zandt County. It was on the property of G.M. Hilliard, a pioneer rancher and merchant. His estate in 1968 sold this park site to the city of Canton.

To the letterbox:

From downtown Canton, Texas, travel Hwy 19 towards Athens. At the Hwy 19/FM 243 intersection, turn East onto FM 243. You will travel approximately .8 miles past the Wal-Mart supercenter to Arnold Paul drive. Arnold Paul drive will be on your right hand side before the First Assmbly of God church. Turn onto Arnold Paul drive and travel approximately .3 miles until the road curves to your left. At this curve, look to your left and you will see the historical marker and the old dipping vat. Across the street from the marker is the Water Treatment Plant. After you view the site, continue driving on Arnold Paul road about .1 miles. You will turn right onto a black top road after the Animal Control Building. As soon as you are on the black top road that leads to Canton City Lake, look to your left and you will see a "circle drive". Turn onto the circle drive and park a the center of the circle drive's curve. Walk Eastward about 10 steps from the drive towards two medium sized trees that are growing very close together. Between these trees, you will find The Dipping Vat. Please rehide and cover well.
