Cedar Lakes

Cedar Lakes Conference Center began over 50 years ago as an FFA/FHA camp with the donation of over 200 acres to the West Virginia Board of Education. It hosts many craft workshops, old-fashioned to modern, along with 4-H and band camps and even the Mountain State Arts and Crafts Fair during the 4th of July week. It has a lodge, many cottages and a dining hall to accommodate groups. There are sports fields, a swimming pool, boat rentals and putt-putt golf all in a picturesque, park type setting. Growing up in this area, I enjoyed riding my bicycle on these grounds and summer evenings were filled with music from the many high school band camps held here.

Directions:
Locate Cedar Lakes Conference Center 2 miles south of Ripley on Cedar Lakes Road. See www.cedarlakes.com for directions and a map of the grounds. Drive onto the grounds, noting a large ‘Cedar Lakes’ sign on your right and the Staats Mill Covered Bridge on your left. You will come to an intersection with a second large ‘Cedar Lakes’ sign at which traffic is one-way and you are directed to the right. You might as well take in the sights as you circle around Mirror Lake: the pool, the cottages, the dining hall and return to the intersection and park on your right (Parking Lot #10 on the map). Walk over to the large Cedar Lakes sign admiring the surrounding flowerbed. Notice a gap at the south end of the sign between the landscaping brick for the flowerbed and the red brick that supports the sign. There you will find a zip-lock bag covered in camouflage. This may be a challenge to retrieve unobserved due to the openness of the location so please be discrete! Note how the items are arranged so that you can repackage the same. The completed package needs to be thin and if its width includes both the stamp and the logbook it will not fit back into the hiding place. Take care that all bags are sealed completely before carefully rehiding them. Enjoy!
