This letterbox is hidden on a trail that borders Lake Cochituate in Natick, MA -- a great area for swimming, fishing, pinicing & messing about in boats. We reached the letterbox spot by canoe, so these directions follow our route. We have no ink pad in this letterbox yet but will add one sometime.

For information about the state park see http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/northeast/coch.htm

For directions to the main boathouse, on Route 30 just off exit 13 of the Mass Pike, see http://paddleboston.com/natick/directions.php

You can print a paddling map of the lake here: http://paddleboston.com/natick/map.php

You can rent canoes, kayaks, rowboats and paddleboats at the boathouse (www.paddleboston.com/natick.php). Sections of the lake are linked by underpasses below the major highways.

From the boathouse, which is in Middle Pond, head east (left) to the first underpass. The second underpass is visible; pass through that too. This brings you out on North Pond. On the right-hand shore you'll see a boathouse and a beach in the distance; to the left, you see woodland jutting out into the lake. Head towards the middle of this peninsula. As you get closer you'll see that a group of trees stands forward of the rest; a tiny island. Behind the island is a small silty beach where you can leave your boat. There's a trail into the woods.

Now you're in a small wooded valley. You have two choices. If you feel like scrambling up the steep slope to your right, go for it. At the top you'll meet a trail; head left. A fallen tree has been cut to keep the trail clear. The trail curves to the right; you'll see another fallen tree, well rotted, to your right, just a few steps off the trail. The letterbox is concealed about halfway along the trunk, under bark.

If you come into the woods off your boat and think better of that steep slope, go up the lower bank on your left instead, and follow the trail until you come out on a wide track. Turn right. A few yards up, take the narrower trail on the right that heads uphill. At the top, on the other side of the trail, you'll see the fallen, rotted tree that houses the letterbox. The area is exposed so please be discreet.

Thanks for searching! Please seal the baggies and box tightly and hide it really well. Enjoy the lake.
