North Fork Letterbox

*** Box replaced 7/20/08. (Original 2007 box was swept away in spring '08 flooding. No telling where it landed!)

Find the historic and still active North Fork Baptist Church, which recently celebrated its 250th birthday. Park in the parking lot. You will be hiking about one mile out and back so take your water.
Head out toward the road and take a left to its end. Walk past the "private drive" sign and continue down the hill on the gravel driveway. Go past the "Weschler 38313" signs and continue downhill. Please be quiet walking past houses. Make a left between the two green trail markers and enjoy this horse trail (watching out for presents to step into.).
Follow the green trail blazes (built by an Eagle Scout several years ago!), keeping left of the markers with the field fence on your left. There are loads of deer here, so if you are quiet you will spot them. At the creek, look to the right at the historic Swinging Bridge high over the creek. Stand at the ladder base of the bridge and on a bearing of 282 degrees, you will see a very large two-trunked tree. No Hunting here, except for letterboxes. The prize you seek is on the southeast side.
After your find, you might want to investigate the bridge. If you choose to cross it, it is at your own risk. Over the years, many cycling boys in the neighborhood have dragged their bikes over the bridge to get to the Mount Gilead trails.
We hope you enjoyed our North Fork neighborhood.
