Col. Hammond by Mr. & Mrs. LAFS
Col. Leroy Hammond Park, Knobcone Ave., North Augusta, SC

Col. Leroy Hammond Memorial Park is a beautiful, 2 acre park in a quiet residential area. Wooden bridges cross over a rock-bed stream. An expansive grassy area is great for playing ball or just relaxing in a tranquil setting. Children will love the spring riders, swing sets, slides, and monkey bars on the wood-chip playground. Shady picnic areas are perfect for meals, snacks, or birthday parties.

In 1790, present-day North Augusta was known as “Campbell Town”, founded by South Carolinian Col. John Leroy Hammond. It was a tobacco and cotton trading development. He competed with Ezekiel Harris to store and ship agricultural products, such as tobacco and cotton, and a trade war ensued. Hammond is said to have been killed under mysterious circumstances in 1799. The area was known as “Campbell Town” until 1810 and in 1821 became known as “Hamburg”.

Directions:
Take I-20 to SC Exit 1 to SC-230-South / Martintown Rd. toward North Augusta for about a half mile. Turn left at Knobcone Ave. and continue for about 1 mile to Col. Leroy Hammond Park on the left. Additional parking at the back of the park, on Lodgepole Ave.

Clues:
Find the metal bench and have a seat. Slide down to the left side of the bench and look up toward Knobcone Ave. You will see a sort of double legged “T” swing set. Look through the center of the “T”, along the black edging, and that’s where the letterbox is hiden. You have to dig, but no tools are required.
