Hovander Park is one of my favorite developed parks in Whatcom County. I’ve spent so many hours here, that it seemed the obvious choice for my first planted letterbox!

The park and Tenant Lake Wildlife Area encompass 720 acres that offer a wide variety of amenities to visitors including: playgrounds, observation towers, picnic shelters, a demonstration garden (maintained by the Whatcom County Master Gardeners), a collection of antique farming implements, farm animals, trails and even a Fragrance Garden, where you are encouraged to feel the plants’ textures and release their fragrances.

Hovander Park is named after Hokan Hovander, who immigrated here from Sweden with his family in 1897. The house was completed in 1903 and the barn was completed eleven years later. Whatcom County Parks & Recreation restored the farm in 1971.

To get to the park: To reach the park take the Ferndale Exit (262) off Interstate 5. Turn right to go west, go under the railroad overpass, then immediately turn left and follow signs to the park.

You may want to plan your visit for when you can get a tour inside the house.
The house is open from 12noon-4pm on the following days:
·Saturdays in May
·Thursday thru Sunday in June to early September

The clue:
Drive around and park your car,
Look around, see where you are.

Walk between house and barn,
Heading south, it is not far.

A tall red tower will catch your eye,
A place where you can look on high.

Take some time to search inside,
For this is where your treasure hides.

Please note this letterbox is bigger than a film canister, but not large enough to share with a hitchhiker. Enjoy!
