Historically significant sites are found throughout the Deschutes National Forest. Among them are places that are very special to the Native American people who inhabited this area centuries ago. As you search for this letterbox, please keep in mind the very special nature of this area and its spiritual meaning.

Access to this box is somewhat dependent upon weather conditions - if the snow level is low, the trail might not be navigable.

Begin your journey in Bend on the roundabouts that lead to the Cascade Lakes Highway. As you pass Sparks Lake, begin to watch for a large lava flow on the right. If you come to Devil's Lake on the left, you've gone too far.

Pull off the road at the lava flow known as the Devil's Garden. Walk to the metal pedestal that contains a visitor log. Sign in and look around you at the first of the ancient pictographs. From the pedestal, turn to your right and walk down a sandy path, looking for pictographs along the way. Please remember - the pictographs are a historical artifact and they are not to be damaged in any way. At the bottom of the hill rest at a large lava rock in the middle of the path.

At 16 paces to the right, find yourself on a stump facing your audience. The audience member to your left guards the treasure you seek under rocks and debris.

Please be sure to re-hide the box completely. This is a high use area. After making your way back to the path, continue your journey across the base of the lava flow and along the trail through the meadow. You'll come to much newer "pictographs" on the rocks, evidence that some have no regard for natural treasures. The trail continues to a junction that will take you over the top of the lava flow and back down to the road if you feel energetic and have good shoes. Let us know if you find the box!
