Willie Nelson (born William Hugh Nelson, April 30, 1933) is an American entertainer and songwriter, born and raised in Abbott, Texas. Willie Nelson and his sister, Bobbie Nelson were raised by their grandparents after their parents, Ira Doyle Nelson and Myrle Marie Greenhaw divorced. His grandparents William Alfred Nelson and Nancy Elizabeth Smothers gave him mail-order music lessons starting at age six. Willie played the guitar, while Bobbie played the piano. He met Bud Fletcher, a fiddler, and both siblings joined his band, Bohemian Fiddlers, while Nelson was in high school. After graduation, Nelson joined the Air Force, but left due to back problems. He also attended Baylor University for one year. Eventually, he became a DJ at a country music radio station in Fort Worth, while singing locally in honky tonk bars.
Red Headed Stranger is a 1975 album by American outlaw country singer Willie Nelson. A concept album, Red Headed Stranger is about a fugitive preacher, on the run from the law after killing his wife. Red Headed Stranger was a blockbuster among both country music and mainstream audiences, going multiplatinum and making Nelson one of the biggest stars in country. In 1986 the film Red Headed Stranger was released with Nelson starring in the role of the preacher. I thought it fitting to place this letterbox, the first in the Willie Nelson Series, in Willie's hometown, and because he portrayed a preacher in the movie Red Headed Stranger, it's located at a church!

To the letterbox:

On Interstate 35, located between Waco and Hillsboro, you will find the small Texas town of Abbott. Take the Abbott exit 358 and travel East into Abbott, which will be Walnut Lane. Follow curvy Walnut Lane across the railroad tracks until you come to Borden Street. The historic Abbott Baptist Church is on the corner of Borden and Walnut, and across Walnut you will see First Methodist Church, which is also an historical site in Abbott. Stand in front of Abbott Baptist Church and read the historical marker. When your ready, walk to your right and follow the sidewalk around to the side of the church. You will see a side door entrance to the church. Pass the door where the sidewalk ends. The last shrub holds in its center the Red Headed Stranger.
