There are two boxes hidden near the fire tower in the heart of Cook Forest. They are child friendly.
The park is located in Clarion, Forest and Jefferson counties. From the east take exit 13 off Interstate Route 80 then PA Route 36 North, directly to the park in Cooksburg. From the west take exit 8 off Interstate Route 80 then take PA Route 66 North to Leeper. From Leeper follow PA Route 36 South, 7 miles to the park.
Cook Forest State Park is open on a year-round. A trail system of 27 miles reaches magnificent timber stands. Family camping, organized group tenting and log cabins are available. Fishing, picnicking, swimming and canoing are popular summer pursuits. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, sledding and ice-skating.
TO REACH THE BOXES:
My group which included four and five year old kids parked at the park office near the river. We crossed the road and started up the hill. It was a bit of a huffer and puffer but we made it. Go past the dead tree covered in graphitti in the middle of the trail. Keep going up. Pass the double rocks. Keep going up. When you finally (huff) reach the top (puff) you will intersect with another trail. Turn left toward the tower. You will pass through a section where there are rocks enclosing you on either side. After you pass through, turn to the left and go around to the backside of the rock. The first box is hidden under a rock leaning against the big rock.
Get back on the trail and continue on to the tower. When you reach the end of the trail you will see a parking lot (what, you mean we could have driven up here!?!? Oh well, walking is more exciting and challenging.) pass that and go to the tower. The second box is near the tower. Face the tower. From the front left leg turn to the left and go about 30 paces. The box is under a largish rock tilted up. There is another rock underneath. The box is next to bottom rock under small pile of rocks.
If you want to avoid the hill, you can drive to the parking lot. As you head toward the tower there is a trail sort of to the leftish. Take that a couple of hundred yards to the rocks and then follow the directions as if you walked up the hill.
