In March of 1963 Alfred Hitchcock brought to the screen this masterpiece starring Rod Taylor, Tippi Hedrenand Suzanne Pleshette. Also turning in a wonderful performance, as always, was Jessica Tandy. This film is set in Bodega Bay, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean on the coast of Northern California and was filmed here or throughout Sonoma County, Ca.
This movie differs from any other movie, then OR now.... in that is has NO musical score. The only music in the movie is sounds created by a mixtrautonium, a very early proto-synthesiser..... and the children singing in Miss Hayworth's (Pleshette) classroom.
The tagline that is most remembered is "And remember.... the next scream you hear could be your own".
This movie is "THE BIRDS".
THE BIRDS Trivia:
The scene where Tippi Hedren is ravaged by birds near the end of the movie took a week to shoot. The birds were attached to her clothes by long nylon threads so they could not get away.
This is one of those films that, even now, in these modern days of CGI and all special effects..... can hold it's own alongside any horror movie made. It truly is TIMELESS.
To find THE BIRDS, you must be at Lake James State Park near Nebo NC. The park is easily accessible from I40, exit 90 or HWY 70..... Follow the brown PARK signs.
Once in the park.... go to the Day Use Area parking lot. Park in the first lot on the right that you come to (speed bump right before you park, OUCH).....There is a trail leading off near that first parking space. The trail splits just a short ways in, follow the trail with a RED DIAMOND for it's marker. Follow this red diamond trail until the water is close to you on the left and you go down a steep hill. At the bottom of the hill a sluceway runs under the road and the road curves. Standing on this sluceway, look up the hill to the right. You'll see 3 rotted stumps. THE BIRDS are nesting in the stump that is next to the forked tree.... covered by sticks and leaves.
