Status of Minibox: Alive and Well on 9/15/08
This box is located near Humphreys peak, the highest point in AZ. The area is called Lockett Meadows, and is a great escape from the heat into an aspen filled meadow, with great wildflowers. The hike into the "Inner Basin" is great, and at the end you are rewarded with a 360 view of the mountains around.
Directions:
From Flagstaff, go North on Hwy 89 for about 17 miles. When you reach the sign for Sunset Crater, go left (instead of right into Sunset Crater). This will put you on FR 520. Follow the signs to Lockett Meadow from here (I believe it is FR 528). Once at the Meadow, follow oneway road around to parking area for the trail.
To the Minibox:
Walk to the "Inner Basin" trailhead. Take this trail into the forest. At 1.5 miles you will come to a few building and a trail junction. Continue on the Inner Basin trail, climbing up past a water pump building and eventually into the basin meadow. Walk to the wooden pump house there (Brown sign saying "Well #9). No back track on trail to the trail sign just before a fork in trail. From sign, go right (away from buildings) into the meadow for 30 steps to a large tree. To the left of this tree is a smaller tree. Look on back side of the smaller tree about 5feet up for box hanging from a branch. *** Update - box still there but on the ground).
