Lost Sand Dollar - Whitemarsh Park

Placed by: The Foxes
Placement Date: Sept 3, 2007 - Sept, 2010
State: Maryland
County: Prince Georges
City: Bowie
Number of boxes: 2
*** NEW BOX - Sept 2010 ***

Directions

From US Rt.50 take Exit 13 Md Rt 3 North < 1 mile to Whitemarsh Park Cross over (on left)- go 200ft on South Rt 3 then Right to Whitemarsh parking at the far end of the road. Beyond the parking lot is a driveway to the Bowie Playhouse and a paved bike trail into the woods. Bring your compass.

Distance: less than 1 mile
Difficulty: Easy

Background: This is a City of Bowie park surrounding Whitemarsh creek with a paved bike/foot path connecting to Rt. 450 on the North and Stonybrook Dr. on the West. In addition there are several foot trails designated nature trails with markers identifying the trees placed by the Boy Scouts some years ago.

Clues
Head Southwest down the paved Bike/Foot path, check out the Yellow or Tulip Popular tree along the way, near the bottom of the hill look for a foot path marked with a red boot sign on the right. Take the Red Foot Trail (see new box note below)to the intersection of the Green, Yellow and Orange Trails on the left - follow the Green trail (it branches to the right shortly). This trail goes along the ridge above Whitemarsh creek the Orange and Yellow trails descend to the creek and follow it and then rejoin the Green trail. Continue along the Green trail until it makes a sharp right angle turn with two fences at right angles to keep you from going down the hill - stop. With your back to the fence look SSW up the hill about 20 paces for a Tulip Popular with four trunks the Treasure Chest is at their base.
Return to the trail and continue shortly you will emerge at the back of the Bowie Playhouse - take a break in the campfire circle then walk down the driveway to the parking lot.

New Box: As you walk down the Red foot path look for nature trail post #19. About 45ft to the SE up the hill is a large Oak tree - check at the base for signs of an earlier traveler in the box. Return to the footpath and soon you will pass the Yellow path - continue on the Red path to the Green path to find the sand dollar.

Note: Why not start out with a search along the way for the new “Arborology Redux” boxes?
