Route 91 N exit 12, right at end, go left at stop sign onto route 5 N.
Follow to the yellow church turning left with the yellow arrow. Look for a gravel driveway on the right just after seeing bike trail signs on the left. Turn right and park on the right, walk towards the gate and you’ll see a sign board saying Maanawaka Conservation Area.
Enter the trail, cross bridge and soon see the split for the Backwater Trail blazed in blue. To the right is an old dam (factory?). Follow the blue blazes going downhill, under power lines and then back into the woods. Keep an eye out for an old birch with spider legs. Stand on the mossy rock just before the tree and site 340 degrees looking between the pines to see another birch uphill. Look behind this one.
If you continue on you’ll come to barbed wire across the trail. In fact there’s quite a bit of that barbed stuff around so tread carefully.
