01/14/12 - Performed maintenance and everything looks good.

Please note that this letterbox is also a very active geocache, so it is definitely still in place and the logbook can be chock full of stamps from both letterboxers and geocachers. You may even find geocaching travelers in the letterbox with serial numbers on them. Please leave them there because it takes a registered geocacher to log the traveler in on its website to track its movements all around the world.

We check on this placement often and take measures to ensure it is always in good shape. We welcome you to have a look for it, and although the tree line might give you a little trouble, it is pretty big and obvious when you get close to it. We assure you, it is well worth it.

Just watch out for the possibility of guard-attack tree frogs leaping out at you when you open the "Dragon's Lair"...

Now, shall we begin?

In view of the arena where the Tampa Pirates play,
our dragon hid her lair in a very special way.

A treasure she has hidden that you simply must see,
but if it is taken, her next meal, you just might be.

Start at a spot where a baseball man is shown,
in front of a statue, placed to make his name known.

This baseball man's name is also the name of this place,
a park of large size that could sponsor a foot race.

When facing the statue, head up the path that's due East,
Stop at the end, not at the sidewalk, that's too far in the least.

With your toes at the edge of the path, please look to your left,
a path can be seen, you must walk down this cleft.

You will come to wood posts, standing straight up and true,
place your compass on top of one, it's a sight-post for you.

Look towards the trees, when looking along 320 degrees,
there's a cleft in the bushes, which you can barely see.

The distance is the same in feet as your compass will show,
Some distance to travel, but not that far to go.

When you come to the treeline, a small path you might be 'peeping',
look past a small tree for a large one, BEHIND which our dragon is sleeping.

An "Entomology Study" sign, will confirm that you are there,
placed for those who don't know of us, and to give them a scare.

To gain access to the lair, you will need a number to get in,
without this number with you, you will stand there in chagrin.

Lock Combination: 18 - 24 - 10

Lock Instructions:

1. Turn dial to the right (clockwise) 3 full revolutions and stop at 18 (eighteen).

2. Turn dial to the left (anti-clockwise) one full turn past 24 (twenty-four), then stop on 24 when it comes up the second time.

3. Turn the dial to the right (clockwise) and stop at 10 (ten).

4. Pull down on the lock, and it will open if you dialed the combination correctly. When you have finished your mission, please return the lock to its original position with the dial facing towards you and snap it closed.

Note: This is best attempted with a partner whom can walk out to the treeline while you do the sightline with your compass. After your partner is lined up with the sightline, this is just about the entry point into the trees. You only need to go in 20-25 feet, then look left and right to see if you can spot an oak tree that is about 2 feet thick. If you're close enough, you are sure to see your objective because our dragon doesn't care for a small home.

Hike Length: less than 0.1 mile from the statue, .75 miles round-trip from the closest parking along the Himes Road side of the park. You may be able to park at the Cancer Awareness mini-parking area at the southwest corner of the park, but the gate is closed and locked more often than it is open.
