Easy walk
approx 3/4 mile

Byers woods is a former landfill that has been reclaimed and placed on a 30 year observation list. It was named after State Represenative Byers and his wife Marilyn who was one of the longest running county commissioenrs in Ohio. It has been converted to a park for walks, birdwatching, fishing and horseback riding. The trails are very clear and you will see everything from deer to songbirds to pheasants. It is a great place to bring your dog.(no bikes or motor vehicles). Lets get started! Take state route 60 south out of Ashland. Turn left on County road 1754 (there is a sign there also). The park is on your right. Go to the parking lot and you will notice a large red building. On the north side of the building is a beautiful wildfloweer garden.Between these two is where the Prairie Trail starts. Walking west on the trail, watch for deer feeding in the fenced off area on the left and pheasants on the right in the field. Thanks to Pheasants Forever for all the work they did on this site. You will come to a corner of the fence. Follow the trail around to your left so you are walking south. At the top of the hill you will notice that the trail splits. Bear to the right and go down the hill. The trail splits again here, but keep going straight. You will pass a sign that says "Career Center loop. The school students help maintain the park. You will go across the field and down it's side, great place for blackberries. You will see a silver metal post. Turn right and you will see the pond. If you are lucky, you may see the big catfish that lives there(there are four total in the park)at the end of the pond, bear to the right again. Keep going, your headed in the right direction! You will come to the observation deck that is on your left. Take time to go up and enjoy the view. Just before you get to the steps of the observation deck, you will see a small sign with a tree emblem on it. From this sign take a compass bearing of 180 degrees (or just follow the trail south if you forgot your compass). From the sign, step off 18 paces, You will see a multi-trunked tree on your left. You will find "Big DOG" in a knot hole at the back of the tree(don't worry he doesn't bite"). After you get your stamp and replace the box you can go back the way you came or you can continue on the path which circles the park. The woods trail is nice, but the mosquitoes can be fearsome!
