Don’t be afraid of the Beast in the Woods. Used to be he belched out steam and smoke and bellowed out demonic sounds day and night. Small children would run and hide and strong, bent over menfolk, cowering, ministered to his insatiable appetite. He was a fearsome sight and a beast of burden. But no more, he’s retired and on display. Suitable for letterboxers and the other sort.

In Willits at the junction of Highway 101 and Highway 20 turn toward the Pacific Ocean on Highway 20. Travel 16 miles over twisty roads through the redwood forest. A leisurely drive of 20 to 25 minutes will bring you to a large clearing on the left side of the road. Prior to arriving at the clearing you’ll cross over the bridge at James Creek and once again at Chamberlain Creek. Right after Chamberlain Creek and the turnoff to Chamberlain Creek Conservation Camp you will see the clearing and the big black beast you are seeking. Park and walk over cautiously. Admire it from its southern end. Then amble over for a view of its western side. Hop up on his wooden platform, but be careful, not all the boards are there. Hope and pray the beast will stay asleep. Check out the beast’s magnificent body. The letterbox is located in a small oriface on its tank-like torso at about 280 degrees at a comfortable height. Insert your hand into the hole and to the right inside you’ll find the letterbox.

Rub the beast’s belly for luck.

Thanks for coming.
