2007 is the centenary of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s death. This box was created in honor of this milestone and in conjunction with the theme "water fowl" for "A Wild Goose Chase" gathering held on October 6, 2007 at the Scott County Park.
A setting of a text by Norwegian poet/playwright Henrik Ibsen, "En Svane," (A Swan) remains one of my favorite Grieg songs.
Roughly translated, the text reads:
My white swan, you silent, you still one,
Neither warble nor trill
Let me to suspect that you could sing.
Frightened, avoiding the sleeping elf,
Always listening, you glided across.
But at our last meeting,
When vows and eyes were secret lies,
Yes then, then you sang!
In the birth of this tone you perished.
You sang in death; you were indeed a swan!
--Once you enter Scott County Park, look for the "Pride Lake" parking area. The lake was formerly there, and now is newly-reclaimed by the park. Because of this, as of the date of planting, there was little signage to help one find the lot. You may wish to ask directions from the office at the main park entrance.
--At the "Pride Lake" parking area, find the large rock with the plaque that reads "Pride Lake."
--Next to the rock you will find a large, grassy trail that runs along the lake. Take this trail to the bench that overlooks the lake. (Watch out for the kamikaze frogs that were jumping at our feet on the day of planting! ;-) The bench bears the inscription: "He gave us a love of the outdoors."
--From the bench, continue on the path 62 steps, looking to the left for a fallen log.
--The box is inside the log, under some bark.
--Please re-hide well, as the box is on the trailside of the log and could easily be seen without a good covering.
Many thanks to Big Purple Foot for her help in creating these clues and selecting a location for the box!!! Thank you!!!
