In the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania is the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. While the park is full of wonderful camping, hiking, and boating opportunities, one of my favorite trips is to the outhouse at Raymondskill Falls. The outhouse opened in May of 1996, costing federal taxpayers over $400,000 for planning, construction, and supervision. This is not your grandfather's outhouse! It has a gabled slate roof (the slate was shipped in from Vermont), large porches, and cobblestone masonry and was written about in Reader's Digest among other publications. All this for two holes - one for men and one for the ladies. It is truly the lovliest latrine I have had the pleasure to sit in.

To reach this storied privy, you need to travel to Route 209 between Milford, PA and Dingmans Ferry. Once on Rt. 209, at mile marker 18, turn at the sign for Raymondskill Falls (left turn if you're heading north, right if you're heading south). Follow the narrow winding road uphill until you come to another sign for the falls on your left. Pull in here and park. The outhouse in question will be in front of you although you'll have to take a short walk to find the letterbox. Take time to visit and see your tax dollars at work.

Facing the outhouse, there is a trail to the right that goes to the falls. Head that way. On your left will be a wire fence. Find the yellow gate in the fence, then follow the fence a few more feet to the next fence post. At that post, you're going to bushwack off the trail directly to your RIGHT, climbing to the top of a small knoll. When you reach the top, you'll see before you a large rock ahead slightly to your left and a smaller rock by some rotten logs on the right. The box is hidden among those logs. Rehide carefully and be discrete as this can be a very busy place.

If you continue in the direction you were going, the trail goes to the top of a very beautiful waterfall, while another trail branches off and goes to the bottom of the falls. If you have time, be sure to visit the falls. It will be worth your while.
