To get to this letterbox, go into Rathdrum on Highway 41, turn left on McCartney Street, and turn right on 2nd Street. The second building from the street is the Kootenai County Jail House. This building is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As you can see from the signs, they are working on revitalization the building for a possible museum.

In the 1880's, Rathdrum was the largest city in North Idaho and was also the county seat for Kootenai County. This building was the county correctional facility from 1875 to 1908. This building was designed by Galbraith and Fuller from Missoula, Montana in the new-Romanesque or late Victorian style. The building was constructed by O'Sullivan Brothers from Coeur d'Alene for $2,500. As you can see, it is a two story brick building with thick walls, granite sills, and steel bars.

To find the letterbox:

Stand in front of the Jail and look to the east. There is a trail into the woods past the parking/turn around area. Walk to that trail and at the Y walk to the left up the hill. Continue on the trail, just as it starts to descend, there is a Mountain Ash tree with many trunks. Under the tipped over tree trunk on the right of the trail is the letter box.

Be sure to rehide it well. This area is frequented by teenagers on bikes. Be careful, there are alot of caves and cliffs within this area.
