Allegheny Trail Alliance

Bring along your own markers or stamp pad, and pen.

Background

The Allegheny Trail Alliance (ATA) is a coalition of seven trail organizations in southwestern Pennsylvania and western Maryland that is building the Great Allegheny Passage, a 150-mile “rails-to-trails” path between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Cumberland, Maryland. In Cumberland, the Passage connects to the 184.5 mile C & O Canal Towpath (another rails-to-trails path) to provide a non-motorized, nearly level bicycle trail system between Pittsburgh and Washington, DC.

The Allegheny Trail Alliance Letterbox is one of two letterboxes marking endpoints of the Passage. The other is our Great Allegheny Passage letterbox.

To find the box

This box is on the northern part of the Great Allegheny Passage bike trail. It is located at the Dravo Cemetery (and bike path campground) at mile marker 122, approximately 1.5 – 2 miles north of Buena Vista. This box may be reached by walking or cycling the path; there is direct car access.

Find the Dravo Cemetery with the 122 mile marker next to the cemetery plaque. Perpendicular to the 122 signpost is the southern edge of the cemetery bordered by a rail fence and a footpath leading to the river. Proceed to the southeast corner where the rail fence turns north away from the trail. You will find a sawed off stump 5 steps from the corner directly under the rail fence. The box is located in the hollow center under some debris.
