137 years of service to rural America! So reads a banner from the website of an organization as American as American can be. It‘s also a fraternal order known as the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. The organization has historically provided a variety of services and once you figure out what the organization is you can read about it on their website. This group has many buildings across the country, almost all of them in rural areas. Often you find them down at the heels, lacking a good coat of paint and a bit ramshackle. That is certainly true of the one in Redwood Valley, a small settlement about eight miles north of Ukiah. Highway 101 bisects the community. You will be visiting the east side of Redwood Valley.

From Highway 101 travelling north from Ukiah take the West Rd exit # 557. Turn right onto West Road. Drive a short distance and take another right onto East School Way. Keep going until you reach a four way stop which is the heart of Redwood Valley. It sports a fire station, a bar, a restaurant which seems to change hands every 6 months, the post office, a mysterious bakery which seems to be open only in the middle of the night and a small grocery store. Turn left at the stop and drive less than half a mile.

Now keep a sharp weather eye on the left side of the road for an old yellow building with a logo and the number 382. If you pass the Lions Club Park you’ve gone too far.

Park your car or tether your horse and strike off walking in the direction of Willits down East Road. Walk on the side where you face oncoming traffic. When you get to a sign which could mean pastures stop. Should you pass the 35 mph sign you have wandered too far. OK. Well, right behind that pastures sign you will note some inscrutable, business-like looking pipes. Position yourself facing the pipes on their right side. Now behind there you will see a low fence and a small/medium young oak. Wedged under the little fence to the left of the tree will be your box.

Happy Letterboxing season!
