The Grizzly Adams Hitchhiker Hostel Letterbox

A Hitch Hiker Hostel is a letterbox with a stamp & a log book of its own & can be found & recorded for itself, yet its primary purpose is to facilitate the exchange of Hitchhikers. To guarantee that there is always at least one hitchhiker in residence you can only take one if you leave one in its place. Please remember to stamp the Hitchhiker you’re leaving into the box logbook & the box stamp into the hitchhiker’s logbook as well as leaving your personal stamps in the box logbook.

Directions: Located in the Bay Path Cemetery, Charlton, MA
From Rt. 20 in Charlton:
Traveling west on Rt.20 take a left onto N. Main St. (at light & CVS)
Traveling east on Rt. 20 take a right onto N. Main St. (at light & CVS)
You will past the Fire Station & Post Office on your right. N. Main St. becomes Main St. (Rt.31 South). The Town Common will be on your left the Library your right. After passing the common take your first left onto Mugget Hill Rd. (across from the Federated Church). Bay Path Cemetery is immediately on your right with room to pull over by the “Town Pound” sign.

Bay Path Cemetery was established in 1764 & expanded in 1812. The remains of many of Charlton’s noble citizens are buried here including Boston Tea Party participant John Spurr.

CLUES:
Enter the cemetery to the right of the “Town Pound” and look for a large tree ¾ of the way up the hill on your right. Make your way to the tree and standing with your back to the tree & Rt. 31 take a compass reading of 116 degrees. You should see a grave marker shorter than all those around it, walk to this marker. You have found the resting place of James Capen “Grizzly” Adams.
James Capen "Grizzly" Adams was born in Medway, Massachusetts. A cobbler by trade Adams had a series of bad investments, left his wife & daughter and headed west during the Gold Rush. In California Adams became a famed outdoorsman, hunting & trapping. He had a special knack for hunting Grizzly Bears & thus his nickname. Adams famous companion was a bear named “Ben” (short for Benjamin Franklin), Adams had raised him from a cub & would walk the streets of San Francisco with Ben carrying his belongings. Adams became acquainted with P.T. Barnum & after suffering what would eventually be a fatal wound from another of his raised cubs traveled back east to New York & became a performer/ partner with Barnum. As his condition worsened Adams left Barnum & returned to his wife in Charlton, MA were he died on October 25, 1860.
Facing the marker & headstone of Grizzly Adams look up and to the right finding a large tree just behind the stonewall. From this tree walk away from were you parked 83 steps (every footstep) & look in the stonewall for what you seek.Always remember to respect these historic stonewalls & search carefully. For those of you having a hard time finding the box an additional clue appears below.
Please remember to only take a Hitchhiker if you are leaving one. Rehide well and enjoy this great piece of Charlton history before returning to your car.

Happy Letterboxing !

Extra clue: from the 2 rectangle slabs in the ground count 5 steps to the hiding spot.
