Emu Feather Box

This letterbox is located at Lakeview Park about 1/2 mile north of the city limits of Janesville, Minnesota. There are several white-tailed deer and an emu living inside large fenced areas at the park. A friend of mine who is in her 60s who grew up around Janesville says that there have been deer and emus at the park for as long as she can remember. We hope you enjoy visiting them and listening to the interesting drumming sound the emus make as they strut by.

From the one 4-way stop in the center of town, drive north on Main St. almost 2 miles to where the street ends at Lake Elysian. Straight ahead of you will be the entrance to one of the parking lots at Lakeview Park. Turn 90 degrees left onto a paved road that will take you past a few driveways and then winds to the right up a hill into the park. On your right will be some large fenced areas where you will likely see a few white-tailed deer and perhaps an emu. Keep driving past a small playground and then a grey caretaker's house on your left. You can park in a small lot on the right side of the road next to a second playground area.

Next to this second playground area, locate a very large white oak tree with massive outstretched branches. Walk to this tree and stand with your back against it, facing the picnic pavillion area. Walk 60 steps straight ahead directly through the pavillion. Directly to your left along another animal fence you should see a tree with five trunks. Walk to the tree. Turn to your right and follow the fenceline away from the parking area until you come to an old rusted firegrill. Go one fencepost beyond the firegrill. Turn so that your back is against the fencepost. Directly in front of you, about 20 steps away, look for a tree with a forked trunk. When you arrive at the tree, notice it has some interesting-looking curvy roots. The Emu Feather letterbox is hidden under the roots. It's a tight fit, so when you are done, please replace the box as far up under the roots as you can and then sprinkle a few sticks and leaves over it so that part of the box isn't showing.

Added note: This box was originally placed in September 2007, but was missing when checked in May 2008. It was replaced with a new stamp and notebook in mid-June 2008.
