The stamps in this series are images of the highway shields of six of the major interstate and PA state routes that lead to Hazleton, PA. You'll notice one of the major routes through Hazleton is missing. Want an image of a 309 shield? You'll have to exchange with me sometime.

Anyway, head to N escopeck State Park. Download a map ahead of time, or just pick it up at the main office. Park your car at the trailhead of the Creekside Loop Trail, marked on the map as [E].

I-81:

* From the parking lot, head down the trail.

* At the first intersection, bear right slightly uphill.

* You'll come to a sign pointing you to the left. Follow it to stay on the trail. (Note that the trail is a bit up from the creek, on the bank.)

* Soon you'll see a 3-tree on the right. Stop here.

* From the 3-tree, head 18 paces at 310* to the crook of a 5-tree. Look under the logs and detritus.

PA-924:

* Continue on the trail. Cross a small wooden bridge.

* See the "Fern Trail" sign? Follow it, heading north.

* Stop at an exceptionally scrufty evergreen tree (is it a cedar?) on the left. Duck behind it.

* From the tree, head 14 paces at 300* to a dead log lying almost in the same direction you're heading.

* Box is underneath the log, near the root end, about two feet from a standing dead double tree.

I-80:

* Continue on the trail.

* At the intersection, head 60*. Cross the bridge.

* Keep an eye out for an enormous double tree on the right, about seven paces from the trail. How could I resist?

* South side of tree, under a pile of bark.

PA-93:

* Continue on the trail.

* At the next intersection, head right on the "Nescopeck Trail," then left shortly to stay on the Nescopeck Trail.

* About 44 paces later, spot a double pine tree on your left, almost on the trail.

* From that tree, 12 paces at 185* to a tree. Look behind it beneath bark and needles.

PA-424:

* Continue on the Nescopeck Trail.

* At the T, turn left onto the "Hill Trail."

* As the Hill Trail curves right, note a large rock just off trail on the right, next to a 3-tree.

* From this rock, due north 2 paces to another rock. Look under the east side.

PA-940:

* Continue on the Hill Trail.

* Very shortly, turn left onto the Nescopeck Trail. (How did that happen?)

* You'll come to a familiar spot. This time, head west on the Creek Side Loop. (You came this way before.)

* Walk past I-80 (the box, that is), and back over the bridge.

* When you reach the Fern Trail intersection, this time head 300*.

* At the T, go STRAIGHT into the woods to a 4-tree.

* Thence, 6 paces at 315* to the crook of a V-tree.

To return to your car, simply head north on this trail.
