MISSING and to be replaced soon!

The date was September 7, 1876. The target was the First National Bank of Northfield. The James-Younger gang included Jesse and Frank James; Cole, Bob and Jim Younger; and Charlie Pitts. The bank's assistant cashier, Joseph Lee Heywood, refused to opened the safe and defended the savings of the pioneers with his life. The citizens became alerted to the attempted robbery and the alarm was sounded "Git yer guns, boys; they're robbin' the bank." By the time the smoke had cleared Pitts was dead, the Youngers captured and the James gang routed.

Every year during the weekend after Labor Day the bank raid is re-enacted before crowds of thousands. During less hectic times you can see the bank, take a tour, view a video and visit the gift shop all on Division Street near Fourth in downtown Northfield.

Outside the bank building check out the bullet holes in the limestone walls. Find the rightmost circled bullet hole. Reach up, grasp a container, and take it to a nearby park or cafe or steps for processing. As this is a highly visible area, when returning the container you might want to pretend to be viewing and photographing the bullet holes. (Replaced 11/19/2007 with a smaller container and a smaller stamp.) Make sure the magnet engages the bar. Thanks.
