Firefighter Appreciation Box
About an hour and a half to hike in, find the box and hike back out.
Can be strenuous in places

This box is to honor all the firefighters who are there when we need them. To all of you who have been touched in some way by the men and women who serve us so well, Mona and I invite you to come and find this box. Grumpy was the inspiration for the box, as he has been on Higby Mountain on more than one occasion helping a hiker, fighting a fire or working at the scene of an accident. May you never need their services, but know that if you do, these people are well trained and ready, able and willing to help you.

To find the box, park in the pull off for the blue trail on route 66 in Middlefield. The pull off is on the westbound side, so if you are coming from the West, you will need to turn around at Guida’s Restaurant.

From the trailhead take the blue/red trail up the hill until it connects with blue. Bear left on blue and follow it past Sparky Butterfly’s last box. That would be the Here’s To You Roy Series. Continue on the trail until you come to a rock on the left side of the trail with a blue blaze on a white painted area, a blue heart and the words you and me on it. On your right will be an area of scrub oak and blueberries. Looking ahead you will see a quarry out to the North. Continue past that rock and a blue/white blaze on the left. When you pass that you will see two glacial erratics up ahead on the right side of the trail. Go to the first one and around to the backside. With your back to that first erratic take a reading of 130 degrees to a large rock. Go to that rock and look behind it.

There you should find The Firefighter Appreciation Box.
