From Vergennes, VT follow 22A over the bridge and turn right on Panton Rd. Turn right onto Basin Harbor Rd. and follow for six miles. Look for signs leading to Basin Harbor Club, and follow indications toward the main lodge. You’ll see a parking lot across from the golf course—this is the place to leave your vehicle.
From the “Basin Harbor Lodge” sign, take about 160 paces to your right, following the pavement around the building. Cut through the Surprise Garden to your left, 20 paces. You should now be facing toward Lake Champlain (behind the cottage directly in front of you). Continue on the path to your left for another 50 paces. Find the nearest Adirondack chair and have a seat. Remain here for at least 5 minutes. Then return to the path where you left off, travel 70 paces up the steps and into the lodge through the left-most doors, ducking under the 100 year old Dutchman’s Pipe vine. Once inside, head right and take 35 paces through two entryways, turning left after the stairwell and out two sets of doors. Turn right and follow the pavement around the lodge, keeping right, for about 75 paces to the gazebo. Turn to face the lodge from inside the gazebo. The letterbox is located approximately 25 paces from here, hidden in a place that will keep it sheltered from those unpredictable New England rain showers. Hint: you have passed over it already!
