Lincoln's Hildene

Our 16th President's son was Robert Todd Lincoln. He was president of the Pullman Palace Car Company. Hildene sits on Lincoln's ancestral land and has breathtaking views of the valley and surrounding mountains. Robert Todd Lincoln was the only child of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln to surrive to maturity. He first came to Manchester as a yound man in the summers of 1863 and 1864 with his mother and brother Tad. They stayed at the Equinox Hotel. He purchased 500 acres 40 years later. He built what would be the Lincoln family home for more than 70 years. If you visit the home you can see one of President Lincoln's "stove pipe" hats. The tour guide said only 3 remain in existance, today. The hat is currently on display at Walt Disney World. The hat will return after April 08.
They have an admission fee that varies depending on when you go. I think it is worth it, especially for your kids to see Lincoln's famous signiture hat.

The letterbox sits on Hildene Road. Off of 7A in Manchester, VT. Enter thru the Main Hildene Entrance on 7A. Drive up the long drive. Just as you drive up and can view the house, on your left will be a pile of logs with moss covering them. The logs sit 15 feet off of the roadway. The logs are just before the white posts that line the edge of the driveway. Nearby are 2 very large Pine trees.
Just behind the pile of very old logs is the Letterbox that was carved in honor of his father, Abraham Lincoln. There are two areas that are big enough to pull off of the roadway and park your car. Stamp in your car, so you do not draw too much attention. I live in New York and will not be able to do repair work to the box. So Rehide well and secure the lid. Thanks
