As a child I was always fascinated by mythology whether it was Greek or Roman or Norse. I remember in fourth grade hearing the tale of Thor and the Midguard Serpgent. In Norse mythology Mjolnir was the most powerful weapon of the gods. It was a war hammer held by the thunder god Thor, the son of Odin and giantess Jörd. When Thor throws his mighty hammer it magically returns to him, and also has the power to hurl bolts of lightning. Whether it is the red-headed god from Norse mythology, or the blond Marvel Comics version I always enjoyed this character.

There are many versions of the origin of Thor’s hammer, but the most popular is that Loki bet the dwarf brothers Eitri and Brokk they could not forge gifts greater than the sons of Ivaldi.

The sons of Ivaldi had fashioned Skidbladnir, the ship of Freyr; Gungnir, thes spear of Odin; and the golden hair of Sif, to replace her hair which Loki himself had mischievously cut off.

Eitri and Brokk accepted the challenge, and the brothers worked the forge together. Eitri used his magic while Brokk worked the bellows without stopping so the fire would neither get too cool nor too hot for Eitri’s magic to work. While the brothers were at the forge Loki appeared in the form of a fly, biting Brokk so that he might cease his work.

Eitri and Brokk were able to successfully craft the first two gifts: Gullinbursti, a golden boar which was given to Freyr; and Draupnir, a golden ring given to Odin. The ring was a source of endless wealth as every ninth day it spawned eight more gold rings just like itself.

Finally, while forging the third gift, Loki bit Brokk so hard on his brow that the blood began to flow down into his eyes, and he stopped just as the mighty weapon was being finished. The attack was not as successful as Loki would have liked. Despite the hammer having a short and slightly bent handle, the gods ruled theses gifts were greater, and Loki lost the bet

He did escape with his head however because to get his head the brothers would have to take his neck as well, which was not part of the bet. Instead, they sewed his lips shut to teach him a lesson. Norse mythology is full of stories of Thor using the power of Mjolnir to literally crush his enemies.

Mjolnir is located in Gay City State Park, one of my favorite areas to do short hikes with the goats. There are many trails throughout the park. From Memorial Day to Labor Day there is a fee. As it can change I suggest viewing the following links to get full information on the park, and a map of the park.

When I planted this box, the park was closed for the season in that the main gate is closed. There is still full access to the park, but only the winter parking lot in front of the park is open and the facilities are closed (although it appears the composting toilets are open all year). This must have happened just recently as I was just there two weeks ago checking out some other boxes in the area. It will reopen sometime in the spring.

Mjolnir is located at the westernmost intersection of the white and orange trails. There is another intersection to the east, but the box is not at that one.

There many way to find Mjolnir, considering the number of trails in the park, and the different parking spots. My suggestion, since at the time of this planting the main gate is closed, is to follow the red trail from the winter parking lot, continue as it merges with the orange trail, and then continue on the orange trail when it splits off again. From there the orange trail ends in .2 miles as it intersects with the white trail.

At this intersection you will pass through a wall. There is a short section on one side, and a long section on the other. Mjolnir is under the last stone of the short section.

Whichever way you choose, use the map of Gay City to do some more exploring, and follow any of several trails which can take you back to the parking lot.
