About a five mile round trip on the Metacomet Trail. Some good views. Stay on the blue blazed trail the whole way, watching out for side trails made by bikers.
Limited parking is available on the south side of route 44 across from MDC’s Reservoir #6.

We seem to be losing more and more open space especially here in Hartford County. When the houses started being built on the route 44 mountain I knew we were about to lose a bit more. This used to be a favorite hike of mine but today the noises from the construction sites was overwhelming.

From the parking lot, head up to the dike, go left until you see a post with a blue blaze on it indicating a right turn down the hill and into the woods (looking ahead you might see the dike curve to the right and then to the left). The blue leaves the dike at the left curve.
The first part of the hike is mainly uphill (always on blue) cross the gas line and then go under power lines. After the power lines you walk through an area of scrub brush and at the top of a slight incline start to walk over ledge on the trail with a tree growing ledge running off to the left.
Walk along the front of this ledge for 20 steps, look under overhang in the rounded front face. Behind a trap door is box #1...be careful, you can be seen from the trail below.

Continue on blue, pass the stump of rocks, eventually coming to a walk along the edge of a cliff for views (?) of too many houses. After coming back away from the edge, stay on blue along a flat stretch of evergreen forest, coming to ledge “steps” on the trail, a left turn and then a swampy spot on the trail. There’s a good social trail to take you around the swamp and right after that watch on the right for a VERY crude bench (made of branches). Just after the bench watch off trail (to the right) for an uprooted two sister tree. Walk along the left side of the sisters to the top of the knoll, look left for a five foot stump. On the backside is box #2 (no logbook).

Continue on for a lengthy (along the way take notice on the left of very neat twin rocks that Gizz says is a double erratic but is most likely a split rock) mostly flat hike until you reach another power line crossing (the crossing starts at the last blue blaze before the opening). Actually you need to stop 28 to 30 steps before that, look right for a two sister tree in front of a ledge for box #3.

Retrace your steps to your car.
