The Abraham Lincoln letterbox, our fifth presidential box after Chester Arthur (Menands, NY), Martin Van Buren (Kinderhook, NY), Calvin Coolidge (Plymouth, VT) and Franklin Roosevelt (Hyde Park, NY) is located in the Carpenter Park Preserve, just north of Springfield. To get there, take exit 105 off I-55, and head into the town of Sherman. From South Sherman Blvd (Route 55), enter The Rail Golf Course. Turn down the trail on the left and drive until you come to a parking lot.
From the trail sign, you'll be taking the Red Bud Trail to your left. Walk until the trail comes to a T. Turn right onto Westward Trail. This trail ends at a T at Northroad Trail. Turn right onto Northroad. When you come to the intersection with White Oak Trail, turn right. From the trail sign, count 20 steps. On the right is a large fallen tree. Abraham Lincoln is hidden under bark under the end closest to the trail.
Continue down North Road trail until you come to a familiar road. Turn right to walk back to the parking lot.
